Linda's Story

The Full Story
My beloved mother, Linda Ingram, a proud Harlem native, was a loving, compassionate, and joyful soul. She had a heart of gold and a spirit rooted in generosity. Her empathy for others led her to feed the homeless and the underprivileged without hesitation. It never mattered what someone was going through, whether battling drug or alcohol addiction or simply in need of a warm meal — she gave freely, often giving her very last to ensure someone else had something.

In 2020, after she lost her battle with leukemia, I was devastated. But in my grief, I found purpose. I knew I had to honor her life and continue her legacy of compassion. From that place of love, SHINE-A-LIGHT21 was born.

SHINE-A-LIGHT21 is dedicated to feeding and giving back to the homeless in the heart of Harlem and throughout New York City. On the 21st of every month, we feed 21 individuals. Why 21? Because my beloved mother was born on February 21, a date that now carries even deeper meaning.

Our very first outreach took place on 2/21/21 on 125th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in Harlem. That day did more than provide meals, it restored hope, dignity, and reminded people that they are seen and valued. When weather does not permit outdoor outreach, SHINE-A-LIGHT21 partners with The NYC Bowery Mission to continue serving those in need. We also make annual donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in loving memory of my mother.

Each year, we host multiple events to further our mission. In addition to feeding the unhoused every 21st of the month, every May we host a Family Day event to raise awareness for a cause and bring the community together in love and service. In our fifth year, we proudly incorporated our Annual Gala, a special evening where we reflect on all that we have accomplished throughout the year and work to raise even more funds to continue supporting the unhoused community.

Living in New York, we are constantly reminded of the growing homelessness crisis. Poverty has reached heartbreaking levels, especially since the pandemic. While SHINE-A-LIGHT21 may not eliminate the problem, we are committed to being part of the solution, helping one person, one meal, and one month at a time.

Her light continues to shine through every act of kindness. And through SHINE-A-LIGHT21, it always will.
